SH4762 : Caernarfon Castle

Caernarfon Castle
Caernarfon Castle
The greatest of the castles built in Wales by Edward I. It was built as both a fortress and a palace between 1283 and 1327. There had been an earlier, timber castle on a motte, of c.1100, on the site. It was perhaps unusual in that it was not destroyed after falling to the Parliamentarians during the Civil War.
