Whitefriars Gate
Whitefriars Gate
Dates from about the mid fourteenth century. It is thought to have been originally constructed as a plain arch leading to Whitefriars Monastery and that, when John Hales took over the buildings after the dissolution of the monastery, he had a second wall built parallel to the arch and a room slung between the two. This has been deduced from the projection of the timber-framed upper room into the upper part of the arch and the fact that there are no stone side walls.

The recent preservation of the three houses, 35-37 Much Park Street, that form this building owes much to Ron Morgan who lived in the building for 45 years and opened a toy museum here in 1970 displaying his collection of toys dating from 1740. He died in 2007.

The only remaining part of the monastery buildings, the east range of the cloisters, is separated from this gateway by the ring road. See LinkExternal link , LinkExternal link , LinkExternal link and LinkExternal link
