near to West Kirby, Wirral, Great Britain

Marine lake
The marine lake was constructed in 1899 by the building of the retaining wall which is seen in the picture. From the mid 1800s the village of West Kirby became a fashionable resort on the Wirral peninsula but silting of the River Dee which had been taking place since the 17th. century probably meant that sailing from the resort was rather difficult and a marine lake would resolve those difficulties. The original wall was breached in 1985 and a replacement was built a year or so later which considerably enlarged the lake. However this wall which was expected to last for 25 years is about to be replaced, due to recent deterioration, during the winter of 2008 at a cost of £750000. The lake is used by West Kirby Sailing Club and other water sports enthusiasts.
