The Breachacha Castles
Old (15th century) on the right, new (18th century) on the left. According to "Guide to Coll" by Betty MacDougall, the old castle has been researched by Dr Dennis Turner who places its construction as more likely to be second quarter of the 15th century, rather than 14th century as previously supposed. However, this is apparently at variance with local oral tradition. Built in 1750 for Hector Mclean, it was in the 'new' castle that Dr Johnson and Mr Boswell stayed on their 10 day enforced stay on Coll.
