Carew Chimney ("Flemish chimney")
(From the information board.) "Massive round and square chimneys were part of the architectural style of medieval and early modern Pembrokeshire.
"The earliest large round chimneys in the County are found in castles, but in the course of time prosperous merchants and farmers built residences with impressive chimneys either on the front wall, or as at Carew on the gable end. Some were conical as here, others cylindrical.
"The date of the house to which this chimney belonged is not known...
"Although most of these ancient buildings have now been lost there are still examples to see at nearby St Florence SN0801 : Flemish Chimney at the centre of St Florence, Penally and Lamphey [neither Geographed at the time of submission]. The house here was demolished circa 1870. The chimney survived and served new purposes. With its two ovens, it was used as a communal bake house until 1927 and during World War II two local families used it as a shelter from German air-raids.
"Flemish House situated behind Carew Chimney was built in the late 19th century. Its name arises from the probably mistaken association of these large chimneys with the Flemings."
