Common or garden toad
Common or garden toad
This one shows clearly the warty bumps on the skin that contain an irritant toxin to deter predators. Even the tadpoles are toxic which means that toads can breed in ponds containing fish who learn to avoid them. Toads are useful creatures in the garden as they eat insect larvae and slugs among other things. Larger toads can even ingest small snakes, slow-worms and mice. Since they can live for 4 or 5 decades it is worth treating your toads with kindness and consideration. They are harmless and reclusive in their habits.
