Beech wood 1982
This is what is called Long Plantation in another image: a narrow strip of woodland that doglegs down from the Ridgeway into the next gridsquares south/southwest. It is predominantly planted with beech trees many of which appear to have been coppiced a long time ago. The wood provides welcome shade or shelter, according to season, but it suffered badly in the great storm of 1987 when many of these shallow-rooted trees were wrenched out of the ground.
