Holdenhurst: the old school
Holdenhurst School opened in 1846 and came under Bournemouth Education Authority on 1 April 1931 when the borough was enlarged to include Holdenhurst Parish. At that time, it could accommodate 101 pupils and had 88 on roll. It was lit by gas-lamps, heated by open fire, and had no mains water supply. Senior pupils (over 11s) were transferred to Charminster in 1938 and the roll fell considerably. But for the interruption of the War, the school would have closed but, in the event, it did not close until 1948.
