Fenced Off Mine Shaft, Melbrecks Moor
The sinking of vertical shafts to access the galena seam was a common method used on flat moorland. The shaft is stone lined and ore would have been brought up by a horse-whim, a windlass powered by a pair of horses. Access down the shaft might have been by wooden ladder or stemples (steps running across one end of the shaft). For close up see NY9401 : Fenced Off Mine Shaft, Melbrecks Moor.
