L7831 : Sign at former nunnery
near to Carna, Galway, Ireland

Sign at former nunnery
Close-up of sign commemorating nuns who lived and worked here.
Translation of the inscription:
"In homage to the good work done by the Sisters of Mercy in this district from 1874-2000, and especially the last three who were here: Sisters Pius McCanna, Angela Dempsey and Maria Collins - Parish of Moyrus"
The Sisters of Mercy were founded by Catherine McAuley, a Dublin heiress, in 1831. By contrast with the traditional enclosed orders, they were very much involved in the community, running schools, hospitals and orphanages, and became known as the "walking nuns". Lacemaking was also an important enterprise in many of their convents, the quality of the work even attracting orders from Queen Victoria. Moyrus/Muighros is the ecclesiastical parish covering Carna.
