The Stations of the Cross
These Italian carvings of the stations of the cross were commissioned by a member of the Middleton family who owned the nearby Myddelton Lodge. They were a prominent recusant family whose prosperity survived the Reformation. At the opposite end of the walk is a grotto and a representation of Calvary.
The family name has also been spelt Middelton. The name of the Lodge also varies. The Ordnance Survey has compromised: the 1:25K map has Myddleton but the 1:50K has Myddelton.
