After becoming fascinated by the subject while staying at Margate in 1901, Hertha Ayrton produced a paper in 1904 entitled "The Origin and Growth of Ripple-mark", which gives a persuasive argument for the creation of ripples from the oscillating motion of wavelets across the beach. Link
