Gatekeeper (Pyronia tithonus)
Gatekeeper (Pyronia tithonus)
The Gatekeeper is a common butterfly in the United Kingdom; it belongs to the subfamily Satyrinae, of the family of Nymphalidae. Its colour and markings are very similar to the Meadow brown > LinkExternal link with which it can easily be confused; the Meadow brown, however, prefers to rest with its wings closed, whereas the Gatekeeper commonly rests with wings wide open. Gatekeepers can frequently be found near hedges and on field margins, locations where field gates are also commonly located.
