Wild carrot (Daucus carota)
Wild carrot (Daucus carota)
An interesting plant, not only as the ancestor of the cultivated carrot but for the way the flower umbels mature: seen here are the white flowerheads which deepen in colour as they mature; the seedheads curl up into cupshapes like birds' nests, which when dried up may detach and blow around, spreading the seeds.
The root is edible but not much sought after, and the plant is regarded as an invasive weed in some respects. It is frequently to be found growing on the coast, as here, and it is pollinated by butterflies and other flying insects that are attracted to the single tiny floweret in the centre of each inflorescence which is coloured pink or purple. This gave rise to the American name Queen Ann's Lace (in Britain this is another name for Cow Parsley). The story was Queen Ann pricked her finger and left a spot of blood on the lacy bloom. The coloured floweret was held to be a cure for epilepsy, and the Wild Carrot also has contraceptive properties for which it is still used today.
