[For more details, see the main description: NS4173 : Dumbuck Crannog.]

In this photo, the wooden stumps that are the remains of seven of the timber piles of the crannog can be seen; more than twenty of these piles are visible at the site, and they are arranged in a circle, just part of which is shown here. One pile is clearly seen at the bottom of the photo, another one right of centre, and the other five are progressively further away, curving around towards the upper left of the photo.

The piles are made of oak, and would have supported a platform upon which a timber building may have stood. Outside the ring of oak piles, stones can be seen covered in seaweed; these mark the course of the original circular stone and timber breakwater of the crannog. (Note that the large pile of stones visible at the upper right of the picture is not a part of the original structure of the crannog; see: NS4173 : Dumbuck Crannog from the south.)
Dumbuck Crannog
This is the best-preserved of several crannogs located within the inner Clyde estuary. See NS4173 : Dumbuck Crannog for a detailed description.
