SO0008 : Gritstone slabs
3 km from Cefn-Coed-y-Cymmer, Merthyr Tydfil/Merthyr Tudful, Great Britain

Gritstone slabs
The whole area is underlain by hard conglomeratic gritstone whose upper surface has been ice-smoothed. It lies inches below the soil surface within the forest and, being almost pure quartz, offers little in the way of nutrients to the plants as it very slowly disintegrates.
