View over Orford Ness from the Bomb Ballistics building
This view is from the viewing platform on the roof of the 'bomb ballistics' building, constructed in 1933 to house instrumentation which recorded the flight of bombs on the experimental bombing range. The circle of concrete blocks is all that remains of a 'timing beacon array', consisting a central lamp, a rotating shutter and a circle of mirrors, which produced a changing pattern of lights. The pattern at the moment of release of a bomb was recorded by a photograph from the plane and could be tallied with a paper tape record after the trial.
The brown track is the line of the official walking route to the building. Visitors are warned not to stray from the track.
