SO0812 : One of the Twynau Gwynion
3 km from Pontsticill, Merthyr Tydfil/Merthyr Tudful, Great Britain

One of the Twynau Gwynion
There are some fine examples of fractured gritstone pavement around these knolls. The pavement has developed across an outcrop of the Basal Grit - South Wales' equivalent of the Millstone Grit of the Peak and Pennines. The cracks shelter a few plants though this quartz rock weathers down only slowly and then to a very poor soil so does not support the range of plants which a limestone pavement does.
