Roof of Laboratory 1, Orford Ness
Lab 1 at the AWRE site on Orford Ness was constructed in 1956 for the carrying out of environmental tests on Britain's nuclear weapons such the Blue Danube Bomb. Although no nuclear material was involved the high explosive initiator was present which could have exploded in the event of a test failure. The roof was made from aluminium and was designed to blow off in the event of such a failure. The roof was removed by scrap dealers following the abandonment of the facility in 1971.
