`Gunthwaite barn, consisting of 11 bays, was built in the latter part of the sixteenth century and is 55 yards long, 15 yards wide, 30 feet high (15ft to the tie beams) an held together with wooden pegs. In the eighteenth century Mr John Wilson of Broomhead said that the doors were wide enough "for a wain of six oxen to turn in it".' (The Penistone Scene by R.N. Brownhill)
