Waste Compactor, Calvert Landfill Site
This is a heavy waste compactor on the west side of the landfill site at Calvert, see SP6923 : Calvert Landfill Site. After the waste is tipped from container trucks and moved into place by bulldozers, the waste is compressed by these heavy compactors which have steel wheels with spikes to break up the waste and rip open plastic bags. The netting in the foreground is there to stop paper and plastic bags being blown by the wind off the site.
On the current OS map the area behind the compactor is shown as water-filled clay pits, but these have obviously been filled in.
