The Empire building, Bath
The former Empire Hotel faces Alkmaar Gardens (left) and Parade Gardens. "What can have gone on in the mind of the designing architect?", asks Pevsner ("North Somerset & Bristol", 1958). The person in question was Charles Edward Davis, city architect, and the date 1901. His roofline represents (left to right) a cottage, a manor house and a castle. "An unbelievable piece of pompier architecture" says Pevsner.

The building was converted into apartments and a restaurant in the 1990s.
