Once every station of any size would have had the equipment seen on the far side of the line here. The brick building supports a water tank which existed to supply water via the grey device in front of it into the tanks of steam locomotives. The horizontal arm of the grey hydrant can swing over the line and has a flexible black hose attached which can be inserted into the water tanks or panniers of the steam loco. Those were the days ...
