River Skell conduit, Fountains Abbey
Taken through an arched gap at floor level in the Cellarium of Fountains Abbey, one of the conduited branches of the River Skell can be seen flowing under a low bridge. The river is split into several streams at this point each stream flowing under Abbey buildings. The river was obviously very important to the monks for many reasons, not just for drinking water, but for sluicing and drainage - and also to provide power via their own mill.
