NZ7209 : Bell Pit, Castleton Pits

taken 13 years ago, near to Houlsyke, North Yorkshire, Great Britain

Bell Pit, Castleton Pits
Bell Pit, Castleton Pits
The area is littered with these bell pits from which coal was mined pre-industrial revolution. This one has been capped off with stone slabs most usually collapse in naturally. I estimate this one is 40m deep. Looking west towards Danby in the valley.
