This old house between Bray and Shankill was the home in the 1840s of Captain John Mayne and his wife (and cousin) Dorothea, daughter of Judge Edward Mayne of O1633 : 28 St Stephen’s Green North, Dublin. Captain Mayne had served with the 9th Light Dragoons and been seriously wounded during the Irish Rebellion of 1798 LinkExternal link. In the previous generation, his father Edward Mayne, a retired officer of the 93rd Foot, living in Co. Monaghan (he was born at H6331 : Brandrum House, Monaghan ) had helped his neighbour, John Coote of Bellamont, put down the local Oakboys revolt of 1763. In the aftermath both Coote and Mayne were tried for murder and acquitted.

John and Dorothea’s three sons went out to India where the eldest, Dawson, became an ICS Judge, and his younger brothers, Robert and John, joined the Madras Army (Robert’s marriage is noted at O1728 : Christ Church interior, Taney Parish, Dublin ). None of the three brothers returned home from India.
