TQ0826 : High Street
near to Billingshurst, West Sussex, Great Britain

High Street
Looking up the line of the Roman road, still in use today. There are two popular theories as to the origin of the name "Billingshurst": the Roman engineer responsible for the construction of the road from Londinium (London) to Regnum (Chichester) was named Belinus. (It is further suggested that Billingsgate, where the road entered the London, was also named after him); or, more probably, as the settlement of the great Saxon tribe of Billings. The A29 now by-passes the village but the A272 still passes through. For it's size it has an range of shops and seems to be thriving.
