Sheep Shelter above Loch Loyal
This 'outside stell' is a relic of early commercial sheep farming and probably dates from the early 19th century. Its purpose was to shelter sheep from storms, not to enclose them. The layout is in the form of a >-< and is cleverly designed so that shelter is available from all wind directions while avoiding corner angles of less than 90 degrees which might injur sheep through cramming (a simple cross layout would carry this risk).
Shelters of this type are uncommon.
