Croydon Parish Church (St John's)
Surprising that until now, there has not been a close up image of Croydon Parish Church on this website. The church has a long and very interesting history, and together with the manor house nearby, which is now Old Palace School, it is the oldest foundation in the town. Inside it resembles a small cathedral rather than parish church - maybe because of its long tradition with Archbishops - incidently, six former Archbishops of Canterbury lie buried within it. Some of the country's most famous monarchs, including Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, visited and stayed here. Its story stretches back well over 1,000 years, although most of the current building is relatively recent, having been built following a fire in 1867 by Sir Gilbert Scott RA. An inside view of the church can now be seen at TQ3165 : St John's Church Croydon Nave
