The barn in the SW of this square - known as High Buildings, was a small farmstead supposedly abandoned in 1916 after the occupants fled in terror when a Zeppelin loomed overhead one May evening.
It is said they never returned to live there and the house is now completely ruined.
Although the Ironstone railway ran above, in those days the area was very remote and the occupants would not have seen a car let alone any kind of aircraft.
The story has some foundation as on 3rd May 1916 there were a series of raids on the east coast.
L.16 was confused by fires on the moor above Danby, which had been started by an earlier bombing mission. Thinking it was Teesside ablaze, they turned inland too soon - and the northerly wind took the craft very low over the moors where it was reported over Rosedale Abbey at 10:30pm
Another Zeppelin had dropped bombs at Nunnington en route to York.
