Boulby Alum Works
Boulby Alum Works
This area of workings is known as the New Works and quarrying commenced in 1784. At its peak it employed 355 men of which 314 were labourers digging and barrowing the shale. The site closed in 1871. View east with Cowbar Nab protecting Staithes in the distance. At the foot of the shale seaward of the area of heather there was until recent times the remains of setting tanks and cisterns. The sea seems to have claimed these.
