Ruined cottages, Tyneham, Isle of Purbeck
Ruined cottages, Tyneham, Isle of Purbeck
In 1943 the small village of Tyneham was evacuated and it now forms part of an MOD firing range. The Government went back on its promise to give the village back to the villagers and in 1948 it was compulsorily purchased by the army. Shelling, neglect and vandalism have all but destroyed it. These cottages next to the restored schoolhouse and church have been "made safe" and visitors may freely wander in and out of the derelict buildings.
