The village of Tyneham was evacuated by the MOD in 1943 when the surrounding area was first used as a firing range. A few weeks before the evacuation the Post Office installed a grand new telephone kiosk for the villagers, decorated in the then traditional cream concrete style with the familiar ornate cupola roof. It remains as restored "modern" feature in the village.
