NJ1867 : Duffus Castle
near to Old Duffus, Moray, Great Britain

Duffus Castle
This is a 14th century building on a site which was fortified by at least the 12th century. It is a motte-and-bailey castle, the motte being the artificial mound on which it stands (not to be confused with a moat, which is a defensive stretch of water around a castle!). The bailey is the outer yard, enclosed by a curtain wall. Originally it would have been surrounded by the Loch of Spynie, but today its perimeter is marked by a shallow ditch.
