"Nell Gwyn's Monument" - Obelisk in Tring Park
"Nell Gwyn's Monument" - Obelisk in Tring Park
This obelisk in the woods that rise above Tring Park is known locally as "Nell Gwyn's Monument" - though I am unaware of any verifiable connection to the Merry Monarch's Merry Maid ! It is thought to have been designed by the architect James Gibbs along with the classical Summer House at the other end of a short ride from this obelisk. Sadly at present both monuments are marred by the mindless red daubings of local idiots.
[Update: June '06] Nigel & Cathy Cox have now got a summery cleaned up image (see SP9310 : The Obelisk in Tring Park)
Tring Park :: SP9210
Tring Park is the former grounds of The Mansion in Tring, which has had several owners including Sir William Gore, Lord Mayor of London; Sir Drummond Smith, a London banker and from 1823 William Kay, a Manchester textile magnate. In 1872 Lionel de Rothschild, who had been leasing it since 1838, bought it as a wedding present for his son, Nathaniel who later founded the famous Zoological Museum that still survives next door to the mansion and is now part of the Natural History Museum.
The park was laid out in the style of Capability Brown during Drummond Smith's tenancy. The park is now owned by Dacorum Borough Council and has been maintained by the Woodland Trust since 1993 LinkExternal link and LinkExternal link
