The Star Pyramid

This pyramid overlooks the cemetery from the north, standing as a "monument to commemorate all who were martyred while seeking religious freedom". In 1863, William Drummond commissioned this monument from William Barclay.

The base of each of its four sides bears a different inscription: "Union Banner", "Rock of Ages", "Throne of Right", "Covenant Rest"; these are the titles of religious tracts published by the Drummond Tract Enterprise (which was established by Peter Drummond, brother of the William Drummond who commissioned the monument).

Below each title is a verse citation from the book of Psalms. Above, on each sloping face of the pyramid, there is: a white marble Bible ( Link ); a carved rosette with a sunburst motif in the centre ( Link ); a stylised thistle; and, at the top, a crown. A Bible and a Confession of Faith (a statement of Calvinist theological doctrine) were sealed into a chamber within the pyramid.
