NG8434 : Portchullin

The small settlement of Portchullin lies 2km west of Stromeferry. Before the Inverness to Stromeferry railway line was extended to Kyle of Lochalsh in 1897, a path ran between the two settlements. The extended railway followed the route of this path, making it practically impossible for the residents of Portchullin to walk to Stromeferry. As a result of many complaints, they were each given a license to walk the railway line. This was in the days of Steam Trains. With the advent of diesel engines, it was deemed too dangerous and the issuing of licenses was stopped.
