WWII 6in battery
This extensive construction is situated by the clifftop carpark > Link at the start of a steep footpath to the beach > Link. It was built in 1940/41 from concrete and steel and is part of what is believed to be the only surviving 6 inch battery from WW2 > Link. Except for the covers of the gun platforms > Link it is completely intact. Forming part of the coastal crust defences, it was manned by 197 Battery RA, and armed with 2 x MK XVI ex-naval 6 inch guns which had been removed by 1946. Defence of Britain database reference no S0000929.

For health and safety reasons (apparently), the gun emplacements were removed (destroyed) on 20 October 2020 by a contractor working for the council, with the remaining structure and battlements believed to be scheduled for destruction in the near future.
