Forest of Dean Hod Boys Memorial on the Blue Rock Path, Upper Soudley
Carving of a Forest of Dean boy hauling boxes of coal ('hod') in the narrow mine shafts - often not more than 2ft high. Children, both girls and boys, as young as 8 were widely employed in the mines all over Great Britain, thus forming one of the - literally - backbones of the industrialisation.
