Llyn y Fan Fach must be one of the most photographed lakes in Wales - in part because of its dramatic natural setting and in part perhaps because of its association in legend with a certain lady -the 'Lady of the Lake' of course.
Its level was raised in the 1930's by the construction of a low dam. The vehicular track which services the dam and associated facilities gives easier acess to the walker from the informal car park at its foot.
The lake owes its origins to the excavating action of glacier ice in successive ice ages, most recently around 12,000 years ago. The resulting rock hollow, partly dammed by moraine has hedl water since that time.
There are very few natural lakes in the Brecon Beacons National Park - the other noteable ones are nearby Llyn y Fan Fawr, Llangors lake (Llyn Syfaddan) and the more diminutive Llyn Cwm Llwch under Pen y Fan.
