Stanley Mills
From the terrace alongside the Bell Mill, looking across the excavated wheel pits at the Mid Mill (to the right) and the East Mill (opposite). At different points in the mill's development these pits held at least three different configurations of wheels. The chimney left of centre forms part of the gasworks, built around 1825 to provide gas lighting in the mill, thus reducing the risk of fire from the use of candles. The external stairwell to the Mid Mill on its right is another fire safety measure, providing a fireproof escape route for mill workers. Fire was a constant hazard in cotton mills.
