SO8629 : Replica of dedicatory stone, Odda's Chapel
taken 16 years ago, near to Deerhurst, Gloucestershire, England
Replica of dedicatory stone, Odda's Chapel
Originally built at the instruction of Odda, Earl of Hwicce, the chapel, which consists of a simple nave and eastern chancel, was dedicated by Bishop Alfred on the 12th April 1056 according to a dedicatory stone found nearby in 1675.
The text on the stone implies that Odda and his brother, Aelfric, built some kind of complex here and the chapel was part of this. Both men are known to have died at Deerhurst and to have been buried in Pershore Abbey.
The stone now resides in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford and a replica is displayed on the chancel wall within the chapel. For a translation of the Latin inscription see
