Rose Cottage Gardens
Rose Cottage Gardens
Rose Cottage was a significant part of Hitchin's past, as it was the home of Samuel Lucas - a noted Royal Academy Quaker artist, and the Hawkins , an important local family. Despite a strong protest from local residents, approval was given for the house to be demolished in early 2007, to be replaced by houses and apartments on the grounds that it retained little of its original architectural merit. The new development is now virtually complete. The name chosen for the development, no doubt as a sop to local residents, could be viewed more as a slap in the face!
