View of Alderman Hill
At 440 metres above sea level Alderman Hill(SE0104)LinkExternal link
is located to the East of Greenfield above the main A635 Holmfirth Road in Saddleworth.
Should you climb to the peak of the hill you will see SE0104 : A view from Alderman's Rocks
In the foreground, were the picnic tables are located, there used to be an old country house called Ashway Gap built as a piece of nouveau riche one-upmanship in a grotesque medieval style, it had been deserted since 1918 when it was last used as a makeshift convalescent home for war wounded.
In 1970 it was used as the location for the filming of the Granada TV comedy series "The Last of the Baskets" in which Arthur Lowe played the part of Bodkin the butler.LinkExternal link
In 1981 Oldham Council in an act of mindless vandalism demolished the magnificent building complete with it's creneliated fortifications and a tower because they said it was to dangerous.
Had it been left standing it would probably have been Grade Listed in the 1990s we will never know.
