TQ1852 : Greater Butterfly Orchid (Platanthera chlorantha)

taken 18 years ago, near to Mickleham, Surrey, England

Greater Butterfly Orchid (Platanthera chlorantha)
Greater Butterfly Orchid (Platanthera chlorantha)
Close up of flower. Note the "gaping" appearance of the pollinia which helps distinguish it from its close relative, the Lesser Butterfly Orchid (see SU1163 : Lesser Butterfly Orchid (Platanthera bifolia)). Note also the long spur (visible behind the flower) which contains nectar for pollinating moths. See TQ1852 : Greater Butterfly Orchid (Platanthera chlorantha) for photo of a whole flower stem, taken at the same site, two years later.
