Balerno branch bridge, Union Canal
Balerno branch bridge, Union Canal
In 1874 the Caledonian Railway opened a branch line to serve the suburban villages along the Water of Leith valley, Colinton, Juniper Green, Currie and Balerno. Shortly after leaving the main Edinburgh to Carstairs line at Slateford Junction, the branch bridged the Union Canal. Passenger trains were withdrawn in 1943 and freight in 1967 and the line is now a cycleway throughout, the bridge over the canal being suitably modified. The muddy offside bank is the result of canal bed repair work undertaken during the winter of 2007-08.
