Haymarket Railway Station and Caledonian Ale House, Edinburgh
A "grab shot", standing in the middle of the busy A8 Glasgow road. Haymarket railway station, was the original terminus of the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway, opened in February 1842, and eventually became part of the North British Railway. The photograph was principally taken to show the adjacent Caledonian Ale House, a pub that was to serve its last pint of ale two days later, when it had to be closed and later demolished as it stood in the way of Edinburgh's new tram line. The pub's name came not from the North British Railway company's arch-rival, but from the Caledonian Distillery whose chimney can be seen sticking up above the railway station's roof.
