SD9531 : Blake Dean (Black Dean)

Blake Dean (Black Dean)
Blake Dean (Black Dean)
Looking east. The area on the right (west) side of the bridge is shown on modern OS maps as Blake Dean. Below the bridge, after the confluence with Alcomden Water the clough is recorded as Black Dean. Historical OS maps call the whole area Black Dean. The element 'black' may mean a pass - from the Celtic 'bealach' meaning a pass or an entrance from one district to another or may be descriptive of the peaty colour of the water here. The road that crosses the clough here runs from Heptonstall to Widdop and on into Lancashire
