3rd December 2010
When the media was wrapped up in its own story of how bad the weather was and how devastating the impact was on the country as a whole, we went for a flight and found this little fellow sitting there happy in the sunshine.
What a lovely day, the air was fresh and still and there was nobody about...text/html2007-07-10T02:17:01+00:00https://www.geograph.org.uk/profile/10841BB50.355230 -4.154112SX4652 : A 25 Ton gun

This gun cannot be seen at sea level from the adjacent square, you have to land and tour the island to achieve this.text/html2007-07-10T01:38:27+00:00https://www.geograph.org.uk/profile/10841BB50.355013 -4.151290SX4752 : The Roof to the 21 Gun Casement

So much work went into developing structures for a specific purpose - only to be reclaimed by nature when the human interest passed on.text/html2007-07-09T01:36:40+00:00https://www.geograph.org.uk/profile/10841BB50.355428 -4.153136SX4652 : 12" Coastal Defence Gun
https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/489456
These 12" Coastal Defence Guns weigh 25 Tons each and were made between 1866-71 by Sir William Armstrong. The full service charge was 50lbs of gunpowder firing an explosive shell of 496lbs weight over an average range of 7000 yards (4 miles). Can you imagine how much was involved in manufacturing, transporting and siting these guns - done in days when men were men.
