More about me

I was inspired to add a bit of information here because I managed a photo on this weeks (Goty 2007 Week 43) final selection.SJ4046 : Track leading to Dongray Hall by John Haynes AND the following week (Goty 2007 Week 44) SJ2923 : Clearing scrub from the derelict canal by John Haynes. This really pleased me.
Wonderful stuff this geographing, it helps me with my spelling (at 66 I still need help) Thank you all moderators! It helps get me out more, but living in the Border Marches that is not a real problem, and allows me to promote all those things I consider to be important.

I moved to Victoria Street, Rhosllannerchrugog SJ2946 : Stryt Fictoria, Rhosllannerchrugog by John Haynes in 1994. Within a few months I had discovered the Llangollen Canal SJ2838 : Chirk Cutting on the Llangollen Canal by John Haynes, The Llangollen Railway SJ2043 : The Llangollen Railway crosses Afon Dyfrdwy at Pentre Felin by John Haynes Errdig SJ3248 : Espalier trained plane trees in Erddig House gardens by John Haynesand the fact that I had a mountain out the back SJ2345 : Triangulation point on Ruabon Mountain by John HaynesSJ2649 : Footpath across Fron-dêg Flat by John Haynes.

We have a lot of rain so we have some great rivers, some big SJ3946 : Bright sunny day on the river by John Haynes SJ2714 : Afon Hafren near Rhyd-esgyn by John Haynes, some smaller SJ2419 : Afon Efyrnwy (River Vyrnwy) turns 360 degrees by John Haynes and some a lot smaller SJ3249 : Afon Clywedog in Erddig Park by John Haynes SJ2332 : Ford across a very young Afon Morda by John Haynes and they all flood sometimes SJ4153 : Reflections at twilight as the Afon Dyfrdwy floods by John Haynes SJ4052 : Flood plain doing what it does best by John Haynes. With all this rain reservoirs have been built to supply drinking water SJ0119 : Llyn Efyrnwy reservoir by John RadcliffeSH9552 : Alwen Dam by Dot Potter and to help regulate water flows SN8889 : Small road on the western side of Llyn Clywedog by John HaynesSH8739 : Spillway at Lynn Celyn by John Haynes.
Early in 1995 I stopped at Safeways (now Morrisons) in Y Trallwng (Welshpool)SJ2207 : Montgomery Canal, restored lock in Welshpool by John Haynes whilst on a journey from South Wales, and discovered The Montgomery Canal. That was me hooked! A derelict canal being restored! For the last twelve years I have walked, cycled and canoed "The Monty" and, of course, photographed it. Along came Geographs and the rest is history. The canal starts here SJ3631 : Montgomery Canal, bottom pool at Lower Frankton Lock by John HaynesSJ3630 : Montgomery Canal, a boat passing through the Palmer Lock by John HaynesSJ3629 : Montgomery Canal just north of the Parry Viaduct by John Haynes which was the initial northern restoration to Aston. Meanwhile sections to the north and south of Y Trallwng have been restored furthest north is SJ2515 : Montgomery Canal, Glanfa'r Dwr Llydan - Wide Water Wharf by John HaynesSJ2515 : New houses beside the Montgomery Canal by John HaynesSJ2514 : Montgomery Canal, Burgedin Lock pool and lockhouse by John Haynes, and south is SJ2002 : Montgomery Canal approaching Luggy by John HaynesSJ1902 : Lock On Montgomery Canal by George WolfeSJ1901 : Canal Bridge by James AllanSJ1800 : Berriew Aqueduct by David Stowell.
In the meantime the Aston to Gronwen wharf section was being restored, there is a nature reserve SJ3326 : Montgomery Canal Nature Reserve by John Haynes at Aston top lock SJ3326 : Aston top lock, during restoration work by Andrew Longtonand some 3 miles of restored canal SJ3326 : Montgomery Canal reed bed by John Haynes. There are 3 locks at Aston the bottom of which is my favourite complete with stone seat to watch the world go by SJ3225 : Montgomery Canal, Aston bottom lock by John Haynes. I had a front row seat when John Craven opened this section on the 4 April 2003 SJ3326 : John Craven opens the restored canal by John Haynes. The limit of navigation is at present Gronwen Wharf SJ3024 : The Current Limit of Navigation by John Haynesbut work is underway on the next section.
Much of the next few miles of the canal is dry and some degradation of the structure has taken place. This means that restoration is often complex and expensive.

Thomas Telford had always been someone I admired and here in North Wales were two examples of his supervision of major civil engineering projects. The Pont Cysyllte Aqueduct SJ2741 : Llangollen Canal, Thomas Telford plaque by John HaynesSJ2741 : Birthday treat by John Haynes and the Holyhead Road SJ1642 : Telford's A5 by John Haynes with the famous bridges at Capel Curig SH7955 : Betws Y Coed iron bridge by RAY JONES & Menai SH5571 : Pont y Borth by Eric Jones.

This area has a few of these SJ1744 : The Sun Inn at Rhewl by John HaynesSJ3345 : Fox & Hounds Pub at Eyton by John HaynesSJ3951 : Pub at Ridleywood near Holt by John HaynesSJ3026 : The Original Ball Inn by John HaynesSJ3425 : The Punch Bowl at West Felton by John Haynes and at least two of these SJ2526 : Offas Dyke Bewery, Trefonen by John HaynesSJ2927 : Stonehouse Brewery, Weston by John Haynes.

This is North Wales and The Border marches so we must include some real stars: SJ2549 : Standing guard by John HaynesSJ5033 : Spot the black sheep by John HaynesSJ0220 : Welsh Mountain-Hill Flock tup and ewe by John Haynes and SJ3827 : Can I be on Geographs by John HaynesSJ2426 : Milking time for the cows from New Barn by John HaynesSJ4442 : These ladies are mine by John Haynes
